Djuan Trent, who volunteers weekly at the Mission, was crowned Miss Kentucky on July 17, 2010. Djuan helps with serving meals, stuffing letters, making calls and raising money for the Mission. Her platform issue is Homeless Prevention: A Hand Up, Not a Hand Out. Djuan is 23-years-old and is the daughter of Lafondra Gaudette and Keith Anthony Trent of Columbus, Ga.  She is a graduate of Berea College with a degree in Theatre Performance, and she plans to pursue her Masters in Business Administration. Lexington Rescue Mission is collecting clothes for kids in need -- including new underwear, socks, shoes, t-shirts and pants. These clothes will be distributed to the Family Resource Centers at 16 Fayette County public schools, where they will be given to families in need. Donations may be dropped off at the Mission's Outreach Center at 444 Glen Arvin Avenue, off of Georgetown St.

Prevent Child Abuse Kentucky awards grant to Mission

Prevent Child Abuse Kentucky awarded a grant of $9,549 for our parenting class. Started last fall, the parenting class is a 12-week series of classes geared toward parents who have had their children removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect. The class is free and open to anyone who would like to come. This award will be used to hire a part-time clinical social worker to coordinate the class and provide case management services to the parents. Thank you to Prevent Child Abuse Kentucky!

Mission starts class on essential workplace skills for job-seekers

This spring, the Mission started a weekly class to teach unemployed men and women how to be good employees. This nine-week course is held on Tuesdays from 3 to 4 p.m. at our Outreach Center at 444 Glen Arvin Avenue. The course is free and open to the public. Students learn essential skills for the workplace, including how to plan for finding a job and how to keep a job as well as how to improve communication, writing, reading and math skills. It helps participants master the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for the environment so they can move up in their job.  To sign up, call the Mission at (859) 381-9600.
