VISTA Volunteer Coordinator opening

Lexington Rescue Mission is seeking qualified candidates for a volunteer coordiantor position that will build the capacity of the Lexington Rescue Mission by growing and strengthening our volunteer base and raising funds to assist those who are experiencing homelessness or are at risk of homelessness. This is an AmeriCorps VISTA position through the Homeless and Housing Coalition of Kentucky's Homes for All Program, and it is a one-year commitment, starting this fall.

Objective: Build a system to effectively manage 650 volunteers and create strong internal structures for coordinating volunteer recruitment, orientation, training, placement, and follow-up so that 85% of applicants who fill out a volunteer application are placed in an assignment and 90% of volunteers express satisfaction with their service experience.


  1. Complete online training on Volgistics, our new volunteer database.
  2. Create and implement a plan to utilize Volgistics organization-wide.
  3. Assess the individual volunteer needs for each division and communicate these needs to potential volunteers through our website, e-mail marketing, online platforms, volunteer fairs, speaking engagements, and tours.
  4. Screen and place volunteers in service assignments.
  5. Provide volunteer orientation and, as needed, supervision.
  6. Plan and coordinate volunteer service projects for groups, developing service learning opportunities for children, youth, and adult groups.
  7. Record all volunteer hours from sign-up sheets in Volgistics.
  8. Recognize volunteers for their service individually, and plan a Volunteer Appreciation event to express our gratitude for their contributions to the Mission.
  9. Follow-up with volunteers by phone and e-mail to assess their satisfaction with their service experience and document ways it could be improved.

Objective: Raise $5,000 in cash contributions and $1,000 in in-kind contributions to support Mission programs that help people take steps out poverty through financial security, find and keep lasting employment, and transition from homelessness to housing.


  1. Call foundations identified by the Development Director to determine whether to pursue funding.
  2. Assist the Development Director in writing grant proposals, and submit the proposals to these foundations.
  3. Request in-kind donations from donors for food, clothing, and other in-kind needs.
  4. Respond to phone calls, notes, letters, and e-mails from donors within 48 hours.
  5. Update the donor database with change of name, address, deaths, no mail requests and other requests.
  6. Write cards to donors to build relationships with them.
  7. Interview clients who have received services and record their stories to share with donors. These stories may be shared through our website, e-mail marketing, social media, and fund-raising appeals.


Personal: Organized, pays close attention to detail, strong team player, connects with people, able to manage multiple priorities, and is passionate about the ministry of the Lexington Rescue Mission.

Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree and one year of related experience is preferred. Supervisory experience is helpful.

Knowledge: Understanding of effective fundraising practices and professional ethics.

Skills and Abilities: Excellent interpersonal communication and public speaking skills; strong writing skills; ability to manage individual volunteers and groups of volunteers; and ability to develop and implement short-term and long-range plans. Driving for Mission business is required. Maintain thorough records of volunteer service, including logging volunteer hours, which will need to be reported monthly to the Director of Neighborhood Services.
